A Mother’s Prayer for Her Children’s Longevity

1. What is Ahoi Ashtami & When is It Observed?

Ahoi Ashtami, also called Ahoi Aathe, is observed on the eighth (Ashtami) day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik in the Hindu lunar calendar. 
This fast is typically observed 4 days after Karwa Chauth and about 8 days before Diwali.
Mothers observe this fast for the health, longevity, and prosperity of their children.

2. Ahoi Mata — Which Goddess is Worshipped?

• Ahoi Mata is a manifestation of Goddess Parvati / Shakti, worshipped for protecting children.
• Worship often includes wearing or placing a silver pendant or Syahu with the image of Ahoi and her children.

3. Origin Story & Historical Begining

• According to legend, a woman in the month of Kartik, while gathering soil, accidentally killed a lion cub. As a result, her children died one by one.
• She regretted her act, worshipped Ahoi Mata and observed the fast devoutly. Pleased by her devotion, the goddess restored her children.This act of devotion is said to have formed the basis of this wro- tradition.

4. Ritual & Worship Procedure

1. Sankalp & Bath – In the morning, the mother takes a vow to keep the fast without food or water (nirjala).
2. Image / Drawing of Ahoi Mata – On the wall or cloth, Ahoi Mata is drawn with eight corners (Ashtha Koshthak).
3. Kalash & Karwa Setup – A pot (karwa) filled with water is placed on the puja altar. The pot’s lid is closed, often sealed with shoots of Sarai Seenka.
4. Offerings – Prepare 8 puris, 8 puyas, halwa etc. These are offered and then distributed to Brahmins.
5. Arghya to Stars / Sky – As the day ends and stars appear, mothers offer water (arghya) to the stars — a key ritual.
6. Breaking the Fast – After offering arghya, the fast is broken with water and food.

5. Jewelry, Silver & Gold, and Adornments

• Syahu / Silver Locket
  A silver pendant or Syahu (often square-shaped with maternal and child imagery) is central in worship. 
  Many devotees also use a silver necklace with beads — each bead may symbolize a child or an auspicious moment. Other Ornaments (Mangalsutra, Bangles, Anklets etc.)
  If a woman chooses to adorn on this day, wearing her usual wedding jewellery or silver/gold ornaments such as mangalsutra, bangles, rings, anklets (payal), etc. is acceptable — symbolizing love, beauty, and maternal grace.
• Gold & Silver Significance
  Silver / Sterling is commonly linked with lunar energy, purity, and calmness — suitable for a ritual tied to stars and night worship.
  Gold may be used where tradition or personal custom favors it — symbolizing prosperity and auspiciousness.

• The main belief: by observing the fast sincerely, mothers gain divine blessings for their children’s health, longevity and protection.
• Originally, the fast was more focused on sons, but now it includes daughters equally.
• The festival embodies maternal strength, faith, selflessness — it reinforces the spiritual bond between mother and child.
