1. What is Dhanteras & When is it Observed?
- Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, is celebrated on the 13th lunar day (Trayodashi) of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashwin/Kartik.
- It marks the first day of the Diwali festival in many parts of India.
- On this day, homes are cleaned, decorated, lamps (diyas) are lit to welcome Goddess Lakshmi and the energy of wealth.
2. Mythology & Divine Significance
- According to legend, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean during the churning (Samudra Manthan) on Dhanteras.
- Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician, also appeared that day holding the elixir (amrita).
- A popular legend tells of King Hima’s son, whose death was foretold. His wife laid out all her jewelry and lit lamps so that Yama (god of death), mesmerized by their brightness, could not reach him.
- Thus, lighting, wealth, and divine presence became central to Dhanteras celebrations.
3. Rituals, Puja & Auspicious Timings
Rituals
- Cleanliness & Decoration: Homes and shops are cleaned and beautifully decorated; rangoli and diyas are placed.
- Vastu Purification: The main door often bears footprints or patterns welcoming Goddess Lakshmi.
- Worship: Evening rituals involve offering prayers to Lakshmi, Dhanvantari, and Kubera.Yama Deepam / Yama Diya: Lighting a special lamp directed toward the south (Yama’s direction) to appease the god of death.
- Buying Precious Items: Gold, silver, utensils, or new appliances are purchased as a symbol of luck and prosperity. Aarti & Mantra Chanting: After offerings, devotees perform aarti and chant sacred mantras.
Auspicious Time
- The evening hours after sunset are considered most suitable for the Lakshmi-Kubera puja. For example, in 2025, the favorable time for these rituals is between 7:15 PM and 8:19 PM.
4. Why Buying Gold & Silver is Auspicious?
Keeping these items in one’s home is thought to attract Goddess Lakshmi’s grace and Kuber’s blessings. With Dhanvantari’s worship, the day also emphasizes health, longevity, and holistic well-being.
Gold and silver represent wealth, purity, and lasting value.
Acquiring precious metals on this day is believed to bring prosperity and blessings.
